20th Annual Gooch's Garlic Run
DATE: 13 Aug 2007, 8:21 pm / MOOD: Satisfied

Annual motorcycle trip from mall to Little Italy raises funds for kids

Rockaway Twp. NJ -- Several thousand leather-clad bikers revved their engines at the Rockaway Townsquare mall Wed-nesday evening before roaring away in the 20th annual Gooch's Garlic Run.

"There's no better place than the Olive Garden to watch the Garlic Run," said Jack MacDonald, who pointed to the restaurant just behind him as he waited for the start on Mount Hope Avenue.

He was among hundreds of spectators, who watched from parking lots as the riders made the trip from the mall to Little Italy in New York City.

The charity bike ride, organized by The Blue Knights International Law Enforcement Motor-cycle Club, New Jersey Chapter IX, is an annual event at the mall that brings thousands of motorcyclists to the site each June to raise money for the families of sick children. It's named for the run's founder, Al "Gooch" Monaco, who was seen leading the seemingly endless stream of bikers who rolled onto eastbound Route 80.

Proceeds from this year's Garlic Run will benefit four children --Olivia Roccesano of Sparta, Paige Meyer-riecks of Sandyston, Harrison Shauger of Hardyston, and Lukas Hoffman of Staten Island, N.Y.

To this date, the Garlic Run has raised more than $250,000 to assist local children battling catastrophic illnesses

Check out the video of the run on my page under the movie section!
