. I was part of a TEAM, who's on a journey to escort a fallen "Commrad Warrior", "A CONSTENT WARRIOR" Home. On the 28th of May 2008. Eddie ws laid to rest with hi wife, Helen, in Dothan AL. We went with the central route of Run For The Wall, then south to Dothan, AL. Rode from Dothan back to Corona in 3 1/2 days to work the follow day after arrival..........................................................
I served with 101st Airborne. I was in the INFANTRY my entire military carreer. I spent time with the "Screaming Eagles" for about 11 yrs. Spent 6 yrs in Germany with the 8th I.D., and 1st Armored Division.
I also spent time under "The Hat" at Ft Benning, Ga at ITC.
I welcomed all who where interested in this journey. I am enlisted the help of the Patiot Guard Riders to form a Co-op through various states to get Eddie Home. With the Help of Eddies neice, Pam Baker, and all I meet along the way....................................................................................................................
Who Is Eddie Livingston?..... From Pam Baker, his neice.....
Eddie was a WWII vet ex POW who served with the 82nd airborne 504th PIR, 3rd Battalion “I” Company. His campaigns were Sicily , Salerno, Cassino, Anzio, and Normandy a jump he volunteered for with the Pathfinders (508th PIR). They were the first to jump that night to set up beacon lights for the rest of the airborne to come in. Eddie and his team were captured 3 days after the insertion, "hunted down like rabbits!" said Eddie. He was severely beaten on Capture when he was identified as "Airborne", June 9th, 1944. The Germans lined up 3 guys in front of Eddie and shot them he was forced to dig their graves plus one extra. While a POW he served time in Bergen-Belsen Buchenwald where he worked on a "cleanup crew" they had to watch and hear the Jews tortured and killed! in his own words, "He had to clean the blood off the walls and floor!" Eddie shed his blood on all five battlefields he has 7 purple hearts 3 bronze star medals w/"V" Devises, Distinguished Service Cross(awarded but not given)2 Presidential unit citations…
When Eddie came home from the war he was furloughed for 73 days to recuperate, when he was ordered to report back he was kicked out unfit for further service. He had multiple scars on his head from being beat by the butt of a rifle in Normandy and also hand to hand combat in Alcamo, he was awarded 10% compensation for the scars $19.00 per month. In 1962 he had 2 heart attacks and a stroke President Kennedy was instrumental in Eddie getting full compensation for a nervous condition the same condition they pinned on a car accident that happened before he saw combat I believe it is referred to as a preexisting condition still used today to deny veterans help.
In 2000 my brother found Eddie living with no electricity or running water for over 30 years. He was paranoid and did not trust people, Eddie was put on the mental ward of the local hospital the Dr. who saw Eddie stated in court he was not a threat to himself or the community, and he was put into assisted living. A judge told Eddie he had to take colon cancer tests and if he refused he would be put on the mental ward of the VA hospital. Because Eddie never received any kind of help for the combat he endured plus being a prisoner he thought they were trying kill him with the colon cancer tests.
The court knew through interviews Eddie hated and did not trust VA. Eddie asked my brother if he could trust me and when he assured Eddie he could he skipped town in Alabama caught the bus to California with just the clothes on his back. I had only met Eddie a month prior to him coming out, I thought I could clean up Eddies house since I use to do it for a living the house was uninhabitable. Eddie lived with me for 18 months until he passed away, he asked that his ashes be spread “where the grass is green it does not matter where it’s all one earth”.
His wife was also in the house with Eddie he had been trying to care for her the best he could, she passed away 3 weeks after he came to my house. The grass is green where his wife Helen is she stood by him through the worst of times and loved him unconditionally.
Eddie told me about all of his comrades he took off the battlefield dead and alive it only seems fitting that Eddie would be taken home by his comrades. A motorcycle road trip is being planned in the spring of 2008 to take Eddie back to Alabama.
